Is this voice recorder free?

SpeakAndRecord's online voice recorder lets you capture high-quality audio directly in your browser. There's nothing to install, no account to create, and no file ever reaches a server. When you press record, your microphone's signal is processed entirely inside your device using the MediaRecorder API and Web Audio API.

The waveform visualization updates in real time at 60 fps using an AnalyserNode and Canvas, so you can see exactly what you're recording — silence, speech, and everything in between. The dB meter at the bottom of the waveform gives you an at-a-glance level reading, useful when you're in a noisy environment and want to make sure your voice is cutting through clearly.

Once you stop, the audio is immediately available for playback and download. The download format is WebM (Opus codec), which is natively supported by all modern browsers and produces small, high-quality files. If you also enabled live transcription, the full text of your speech is ready to copy or save alongside your audio.

Is my recording private?

Absolutely. Everything happens inside your browser using Web APIs. No audio data is ever transmitted to our servers. You can verify this by opening your browser's network tab while recording — you'll see zero outbound requests.

What audio format does it produce?

Your browser's native MediaRecorder format — typically WebM with Opus codec on Chrome, or MP4/AAC on Safari. Both are high quality and widely compatible. We display the actual format in the download filename.

Can I get a transcript of my recording?

Yes. Before pressing Record, select your language from the dropdown. The Web Speech API will transcribe your voice in real time as you speak. For best results, use Chrome or Edge — Firefox and Safari have limited or no support for this API.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, on Chrome for Android and Safari on iOS. You'll need to grant microphone permission when prompted. Live transcription is currently Chrome/Edge only on mobile.
